What is the Comprehensive Ranking System?
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based scoring formula that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses to rank every candidate in the Express Entry pool. Your CRS score determines your position in the pool relative to other candidates — the higher your score, the more likely you are to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence.
CRS scores range from 0 to 1,200 points across four sections. Most candidates score between 400 and 550 in practice — 1,200 is a theoretical maximum that requires a provincial nomination plus perfect scores in every other factor.
The Four Sections of CRS
Section A — Core Human Capital (max 500 pts)
Age, education, first official language scores, and Canadian work experience. The largest section — where most candidates earn the majority of their points.
Section B — Spouse or Partner Factors (max 40 pts)
If married or common-law, your spouse’s education, language, and Canadian work experience contribute additional points. Single applicants score higher in Section A.
Section C — Skill Transferability (max 100 pts)
Points for combinations of factors: education + language, education + Canadian experience, foreign experience + language, foreign experience + Canadian experience.
Section D — Additional Points (max 600 pts)
Provincial Nomination (+600), Canadian post-secondary education (+15/+30), sibling in Canada (+15), French language bonus (+25/+50).
