University Admissions and the “Top 6” Grades
One important nuance: Ontario university admissions through OUAC typically don’t look at your full course list. Instead, most programs calculate an admission average from your top 6 Grade 12 U/M courses (with specific required courses for certain programs, like Advanced Functions for many science and engineering programs).
This means your overall GPA across all courses and your “admission average” can be different numbers. If you’re trying to estimate your competitiveness for a specific program, it’s worth calculating both: your overall GPA (using this calculator, across all your courses) and your top-6 average (using just your six best Grade 12 U/M percentages).

Why GPA Conversion Matters in High School
While Ontario universities themselves generally work directly with percentages for admission, a GPA conversion becomes useful in a few common situations:
- Applying to universities or scholarship programs in the US or other countries that expect a 4.0-scale GPA
- Comparing your standing to friends or peers attending school in a different province
- Understanding how your high school average might translate once you’re tracking a university GPA on a 4.0-style scale (e.g. at Western, Waterloo, or Guelph)
What’s a Good GPA in High School?
A GPA of 3.7+ (roughly an 80%+ average) is generally considered strong and opens up most competitive university programs. A GPA of 3.0+ (roughly a 73%+ average) meets the general admission minimum for many university programs, though competitive programs often require significantly higher averages.
