Canada has no single, unified grading standard. Each province sets its own high school percentage bands, and each university chooses its own GPA scale — 4.0, 4.33, 4.3, a 9-point system, or even a 12-point system. A grade that looks identical on paper can translate to a meaningfully different GPA depending on where you studied.
This calculator was built to remove that guesswork. It covers 38 major Canadian universities across every province, plus high school grading scales for Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Atlantic provinces — each verified against official registrar sources, grade definitions, or the OUAC undergraduate grade conversion table.
How to Use This Calculator
Using the tool above takes three steps:
- Choose your mode. Select “High School” if you’re converting Grade 9-12 percentages, or “University” if you’re calculating a cumulative GPA from completed courses.
- Select your province or university. In High School mode, choose your province — the percentage bands differ slightly between Ontario, BC, Alberta, and other regions. In University mode, choose your institution from the dropdown, grouped by province; the grade scale updates automatically to match.
- Enter your grades and tap Calculate. Add as many courses as you need. For university courses, also enter the credit weight so the calculation reflects a properly weighted cumulative average.
Your result appears with both your GPA on the institution’s native scale and, where that scale isn’t already 4.0, an approximate 4.0-equivalent for comparison — along with a plain-language tier explanation of what that GPA range generally represents.
