The University of British Columbia reports course grades as percentages but converts them to a GPA for academic standing, Dean’s Honour Roll, and graduate program calculations. Unlike most Ontario universities, UBC uses a 4.33-point scale rather than a 4.0 scale — meaning the highest possible GPA isn’t 4.0, it’s 4.33.
How UBC’s 4.33 Scale Works
At most Ontario universities, A+ and A both round to the same 4.0 grade point — there’s no extra reward for the highest band. UBC’s 4.33 scale changes that: A+ (90-100%) is worth 4.33, distinctly higher than a straight A (85-89%) at 4.0. The rest of the scale follows familiar A-to-F bands, just shifted slightly:

Calculating a Weighted GPA
UBC’s cumulative GPA is a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credit value, sum those totals, then divide by total credits attempted. Why the 4.33 Scale Matters for Applications
If you’re applying to a scholarship, exchange program, or graduate school that expects a 4.0-scale GPA, a UBC GPA reported as-is can be misread. A 4.0 on UBC’s scale represents solid A-range performance — not a perfect record the way 4.0 often signals on a standard 4.0 scale. Converting roughly by multiplying by 0.924 (4.0 ÷ 4.33) gives a closer approximation, though many institutions prefer to see the original scale alongside the converted value rather than a converted number alone.

What Counts as a Good GPA at UBC?
UBC recognizes high academic achievement through the Dean’s Honour Roll, which generally requires a high sessional average maintained across a full course load — the exact GPA threshold and credit requirements are set by each faculty and can change, so check your faculty’s current academic calendar for the precise figure.
